After studying Germain for my dissertation; looking into his strategies of work in order to take photographs of people without exploiting them.
The three projects by Germain I am focusing on are Steelworks(1990) For every minute your angry you lose sixty seconds of happiness (2005) and In the eyes of the streets (No Olho da Rua).
Steelworks (1990) Germain visited the Consett in County Durham to photograph the community after the closure of the steelworks. His strategy to mingle with the community and photograph them in a positive light even though the town is losing money due to the closure. Germain was the first documentary photographer I had come across that photographed a British town in a positive way rather than exploiting g them for their ways of living.
Germain used acrival photographs from the people from Consett in County Durham and included them wihtin his photobook. I wanted to use this stratagy of encorporating the group from Missions work within my.
For every minute your angry you lose sixty seconds of happiness (2005) Germain collaborated with an alderly man making a photo book simply documenting this man and his appriciation for the simple things in life. Germain used the mans home album within his work. When exhibiting Germain plastered the family Album floor to celine. This showed the importance of the mans work.
In the eyes of the streets (No Olho da Rua) This was a project with street kids in Brazil. Collaborating in making a magazine style photo book. Handing the magazine out on the streets and plastering it around to get the kids noticed.
All three of these project Germain has used strategies to empower the people he has collaborated with. Making the best of efforts not not exploit his subject. These three project influenced me into making my FMP using differnt statagies within my work like Germain to ensure i dont exploit my subjects.
