First Week 18/10/2018
For my first week at Mission art class, the task was to make household appliances such as toasters, kettles, showered etc humanised. Slightly nervous to meet new people but excited to start my journey of making new relationships and getting my project started.
The Mission is so helpful and on board with my project and are keen to get as many people on board as possible. Each person who attends mission uses the facilities for support or just something to look forward to they provide a range of classes including cooking, creative writing and of course the art class. The class is full of possibility and positivity each person supporting one another. Each week something new and fun using events such as Halloween as a theme if needs be. I was introduced by the class leader Samuel who allowed me to explain my purpose and what u was wanting to do for my final year project. I introduced the idea of giving people disposable cameras to show me their life through their eyes their way. As I was a new face some people wanted to think about the idea of weather, they wanted to take part. Obviously, I completely understood.
Second Week 25/10/2018
This week is Halloween scenes. Using carboards scene sets and making moulds from plaster creating our own Halloween set and of course pumpkin carving. After meeting everyone last week I felt a lot more comfortable. I’m trying to learn names and faces and engage in as many conversations as possible le in order to get to know these people.
After mentioning the idea of people taking a disposable camera last week 5 people would like to take one home today. I’ve explained that they can use the camera in any way they wish. That could be documenting their day today. Or showing me their friends and family, or simply taking pictures of things they like. I’m so excited to receive the images already.
Third Week 01/11/18
This week we are making Guy Fawkes mask for bonfire night. Everyone is given a mask outline and allowed to create any kind of mask they wish. I went for a Mexican day of the dead theme, not sure why as its nothing to do with bonfire night. Perhaps because I did these in art at school.
People have seen my face around a little more now, so they see me smile and say hello. It's lovely how they have accepted me into the group. I’m asking how people are getting on with their camera and a gentleman hands me his back all done. Others who don’t have one now want one. I can feel this helping the group become more creative and me being there on a weekly basis encourages them into wanting to take part.
The fourth week 08/11/18
Samuel who runs the art class isn’t in today, however, they don’t let the people down and the art class is still on. We are focusing on world kindness day and need to make something to cheer someone up or to put on a display. Jackie who seems to have taken to me nicely made ma lovely flower out of tissue paper, which I intend to photograph as a part of this project. More cameras have been given in I have 6 back now. Next week’s session they should be all printed so that I can use the prints from the disposable and negative as a canvas for the people to express with art.
