Sophie Calle- My All-

Calle by her own omission on the Photographers gallery interview video says she photographs absence. Starting with her earlier work Suite Vénitienne (1980). Calle followed a stranger to Venice. Calle photographs many stranger wandering behind them documenting their very move with her camera without them knowing. The man she followed to Venice she had followed earlier in the day then was introduced at a party they both attended. Only through conversation she found he was taking a trip to Venice and she decided to go. The distance between the camera (Calle) and the shadow (the man) moving around the streets of Venice shows a clear sign of absence and distance. Calle has kept this theme in all her work to date. All my love began after losing her mother witch in its-self is an absence. Then to follow her cat of 17 years and farther the year later.

Calle began to pull her work over the years and present together and developed All my love witch is not only for her loved once who passed but her whole existence of work she has ever produced. So they love referred to in the title is not just her family its her work.
