Friday's session consisted of Jamie Colier demonstrating home studio on a budges only using natural/available light and paper and sheets for back drop. Im not particularly comfortable with studio work so this stopped back set up was really interesting how you can create professional looking images with out expensive equipment. This was really handy workshop as university is closed due to the lockdown and I don't have lighting equipment at home.
The techniques Jamie shows explored different facing window and how they create different lighting for your setup. Everyday home items such as tinfoil, shower curtains and pain can be used as reflectors, defusers to control the available light.

Jamie set a task creating our own limited yet effective studio using available window light, and A4 paper shown in figure 2. By moving the mini studio set up to difference facing windows around the home creates a different light on the subject (mannequin). Shown in figure 2 the second row 3rd image appears to be the most successful lighting creating soft shadow detail but maintaining a well lit subject. Granted A4 limits you to a very small object to photograph but by scaling up the paper you can re create this studio set up for bigger subjects. Figure 1 shows using the same object and back ground moving around the home in search of different light sources to create the desired light needed.
This workshop allowed me to see what is possible with limited equipment and how you can be creative in using simple object light shower curtains to defuse harsh light something I would never thought to use. I will be trying these techniques and tips thought my practice to create better professional imagery.
This workshop showed how a studio doesn't need to be fancy equipment witch is something I don't like to use within my practice anyway. The workshop reminded me that using controlled lighting and home studio setups I can create the image atheistic I desire without using external lighting. controlling natural light is an easy way of ensure professional standard of image but only using natural light.
The methods Jamie showed within his workshop equally taught me how to slow down when shooting for my project and consider the lighting, angle, composition a lot more. This will also benefit me when exploring medium format and film within my practice as film is a lot slower process.
